jobmine, gmail and recruiters
Interestingly, companies like Amazon and Microsoft, when contacting the JobMine.UWaterloo.Ca applicants regarding selection for the on-campus interview, don’t bother setting the To: field with the email address they’re sending the invitation to.
The fact that it’s easier to do so, since they’re contacting a dozen or so of applicants with identical information and...

DragonFly and USB
Installing DragonFly BSD 2.4 on my ‘last’ USB HDD from a memory stick, since my ‘dale’ installation got messed up from a NetBSD install.
I almost forgot that DragonFly will often have problems with USB media, and will thus panic upon boot, failing to find the root partition. I’m told USB keyboards are often to blame. Anyhow, just as I’ve discovered in...

Why I've stopped contributing to wikipedia
I’ve used to be a relatively big contributor to wikipedia (both en and ru), periodically uploading some interesting pictures or images of good quality and creating relevant boutique articles in style.
However, right now, I’d say all of the fair-use images that I have contributed have been removed or crippled beyond recognition, and many articles I have created over the years were...

University of Waterloo Career Services — JobMine...
I’m amazed just HOW MUCH the JobMine sucks. There are no words to describe it, and every time I have to use the system I get unhappy before I begin.
First off, the system is only available before midnight. But that is the least of the most annoying things.
The system requires that you submit resumes in HTML format, which is actually perfect, since I do actually write my resume in...

dragonflybsd:
Jan Lentfer’s committed support for DNSSEC. It’s supported by default, meaning you can use it right now on a 2.5.1+ system. He’s tested it locally using these instructions, which I link to…
Wow, what a joke! A security extension that is full of security advisories?
Just the other week:

housemates and the bin
Back in England, I’ve had 4 other flatmates, all freshers and Englishmen, and the rubbish had to be taken out every day, because they all were putting whatever they had right into the bin without any compacting attempts or anything of the nature. E.g. one Pizza box or a few smaller boxes from the drinks or the frozen food — and half the bin is already full. Of course, they weren’t...

Garmin 885T voice recognition stability
My 885T stopped responding to voice prompts today (or since a few days ago). Symptoms included the green voice prompt icon not being transparent like it always has been, and no commands ever being accepted, and the green colour never changing to anything else, other than after a timeout when the feature gets turned off.
Had to turn off the power, disconnect the battery, try to turn it on again,...

windscreen wiper blades for 2008 jetta
One of my wiper blades got broken since May 2008.
The 24” driver-side blade that was supposedly listed Jetta 2008-compatible at Wal-Mart cost 24.97 CAD + 13% tax, and included a number of adapters, none of which fit my Jetta. I later confirmed this with the free-blade-installation mechanic they have at Wal-Mart, that Wal-Mart would not carry any blades for my wiper arm.
Canadian Tire...
